Simple tips for first-time flyers

Are you a first-time flyer? If so, there are some things you need to know before your trip. This post will discuss everything you need to know about your first flight. We will cover what to expect, what to do, and what to pack. Plus, we’ll give tips on making your flight as smooth as possible. And don’t worry – even if there’s a storm cloud in the forecast, we’ll tell you what to do!

It is usual for first-time flyers to feel anxious.

Feeling anxious is normal when you’re flying for the first time. After all, it’s not every day that you board a giant metal tube and fly through the air at hundreds of miles per hour! But there’s no need to worry – millions of people fly daily, and most flights are smooth and uneventful. Moreover, the odds of being in a plane crash are about one in 11 million. So rest assured, you’re more likely to win the lottery than have an accident on your flight.

You may experience turbulence.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that everything will go perfectly smoothly. You may experience turbulence – when the plane starts to shake due to changes in air pressure. This is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about. It’s comparable to a bumpy car ride. If you start feeling anxious, close your eyes and take deep breaths. It will all be over before you know it.

Your flight might delay

Another thing that may happen is a flight delay. This is usually due to weather conditions or mechanical issues with the plane. If it happens, the best thing to do is relax and have patience. The airline will do everything possible to get you on your way as soon as possible.

What to do before your flight

First and foremost, make sure you have all the documents you need. This includes your passport, boarding pass, and required forms or documents. It’s also a good idea to back up your documents if you lose them while on your trip.

When it comes to packing, less is more. You don’t want to be lugging around a heavy suitcase while trying to navigate an unfamiliar place by yourself. Pack light so that you can easily carry your luggage with one hand.

Next, familiarize yourself with the airport layout before you go. This way, you’ll know where to go when you arrive. Check out the airport map online or ask a friend who has flown for advice.

Ensure you arrive at the airport at least two hours before your flight takes off. Once there, you’ll need to find your boarding gate and show your boarding pass and passport to the security officer. They will then check to make sure you’re allowed on the plane.

Boarding your flight

When boarding the plane, ensure you’re wearing a face mask – most airlines require this due to the coronavirus pandemic. Once on the plane, find your seat and stow your carry-on luggage in the overhead bin. Don’t hesitate to ask a flight attendant if you have questions about where your seat is or how to use the airplane’s safety features. They are there to help!

Seat types on a plane

There are three main types of seats on an airplane: window seats, middle seats, and aisle seats. If you’re flying for the first time, we recommend choosing a window seat. This way, you’ll have something to look at if you feel anxious. Plus, people walking by in the aisle won’t disturb you. However, it’s up to you – whatever makes you most comfortable.

Take off

Once the plane takes off, there are a few things to remember. First, don’t worry if your ears start to pop – this is normal and will disappear after a few minutes. Second, try to stay hydrated by drinking lots of water or juice. And finally, use the restroom before takeoff if you can. Once the plane is in the air, you may have to wait a while before you can use the bathroom.

Food on a plane

Most airlines will offer food and drink service if you’re hungry during your flight. However, it’s a good idea to pack your snacks. And if you’re thirsty, stay away from caffeine and alcohol – these can dehydrate you more quickly at high altitudes.

Landing

The plane will descend into the airport when it’s time to land. Ensure you fasten your seatbelt and securely store away all your belongings. Once the plane stops, wait for the captain to give the okay before getting up from your seat. Then, follow the other passengers off the plane and to the baggage claim area.

Collecting your luggage

You’ll wait for your luggage to come out on the conveyor belt. Once you have all of your bags, you’re free to go! Just ensure you don’t forget anything – leaving something on an airplane is much more complex (and expensive) than losing something at home.

My first time flying, a family member advised me to tag my luggage so I could quickly identify it on the conveyor belt. I work, and I have been doing it ever since.
